With three to four doorways leading into the kitchen, the area felt less like a cohesive room and more like a series of disconnected nooks. Storage was minimal, workspace was scarce, and the overall aesthetic was far from the modern, inviting atmosphere the family desired. The chosen paint color, “Pearly Row,” was a testament to the client’s discerning taste—a special order from England, costing several hundred dollars per gallon, with a unique story behind its creation. This bespoke choice added an exclusive touch, elevating the kitchen’s luxury appeal.
Handmade Tile Backsplash
The pristine white subway tile backsplash, a classic choice, was custom-made to order, reflecting the client’s desire for unique, personalized elements. This attention to detail ensured a seamless and sophisticated finish
Quartz Countertops
Durable and elegant quartz countertops were fabricated and installed, providing ample, pristine workspace that complemented the custom cabinetry and backsplash. Previously the only working space was right next to the sink, impeding the joy of cooking together.
Reimagined Flooring
The original kitchen had a mismatched oak floor that clashed with the beautiful 2″ nail-down fir floors found throughout the rest of the early 1900s home. Above & Beyond Home Improvements meticulously ripped out the oak and sourced raw fir wood from a farmer in Damascus. This wood was then custom-milled to perfectly match the existing fir, seamlessly integrated into the flooring pattern of the rest of the house. To ensure longevity and protection against minor spills, the raw wood was finished with a double layer of polyurethane coat.
Floating Shelves with Structural Integrity
The elegant open shelving, a popular design element, was not merely decorative. Each shelf was hand-built and embedded with steel rods directly into the house’s frame, ensuring unwavering stability and a truly “floating” appearance, far superior to wobbly prefab alternatives. The wood for these shelves was also sourced from the Damascus farmer and finished on-site, adding another layer of custom craftsmanship.
Optimized Breakfast Nook
What was once an awkward, tiny, and unusable empty space was transformed into a charming and functional breakfast nook. Above & Beyond Home Improvements built a custom bench, changed the lighting, and assisted the clients in finding a perfectly matched table and chairs, creating an inviting area for casual dining and family gatherings. The original windows and ceiling lines, which added character, were preserved.

Dedicated Coffee Station

The entire construction phase was completed efficiently, taking approximately two and a half weeks. Thanks to meticulous planning and expertise, there were no unexpected challenges or permit issues beyond standard electrical and plumbing requirements.
