Bringing New Life into a Dated Craftsman

These clients love to cook and entertain, but the kitchen in their new home had precious little prep space was cut off from the rest of the house. We solved this by turning a narrow door into a six-foot-wide doorway that flows into the living area, and adding a new island with plenty of space for friends.

We were able to squeeze in some extra storage space with the double-height upper cabinets, which go all the way to the ceiling. To keep costs down we refaced the lower cabinets to match the custom-built upper cabinets and new island, then painted them all to match. We added new canned lights in the ceiling, and hung two pendant lights over the island. The counters are carrera marble, and the twelve-inch hex tiles on the floors are striking and unique–and also hard to find. Our clients had fallen in love with the tile, and we managed to track it down to give them the exact floor they wanted.
